In 2024, the Canadian government introduced an international student cap, limiting the number of study permits for out-of-country students issued per year. This cap affects predominantly undergraduate university students, and does not apply to K-12 schooling or master's and doctorate degrees. The maximum number of study permits issued has been declining since the policy was first implemented, and, as of 2026, the number of international students allowed is 16% lower than when the cap was first introduced.
